1. Our Vancouver store turned 19! Can you believe it? We can’t. It seems like only yesterday… well okay, maybe more like a week ago, that we opened our doors, not quite sure where we were headed. Over the years we have grown up a little bit… into the beautiful, self assured but still quirky stationery store that we are today. Happy Birthday to us.
2. There is a show at the Vancouver Art Gallery on until Sept. 22, 2024 called “Copy Machine Manifestos – Artists Who Make Zines. You should go see it. It is an exhibition dedicated to the history of zines. It is of course right up our alley and some of our books are lucky enough to be featured in their Reading Room.
3. We should think about the return of our annual Book & Beer event, or maybe come up with a new yearly bookish event.
4. Find some photos below referencing some of these notes. 5. We both still hate cantaloupe.
6. Speaking of melons, it is sticky tree season on Main Street, which means a tacky layer of aphid juice dons the sidewalk in front of our store. City arborist Amit Gandha says "Basically, it's honeydew liquid, a sugar rich substance that the aphids secrete out.” Needless to say, not our favourite time of year.
7. Our Letter Writing Club is starting up again in September! Taking place on the first Thursday of every month at our flagship store in Vancouver, this free event is open to everyone, especially those of us who love writing letters as much as we love receiving them. We have changed our format a little bit to accommodate more people, but as always, there will be… tea, cookies, paper, typewriters & encouragement. Find all the information on our website.
8. To prepare for this momentous occasion, we have taken some of our most cherished typewriters to get a tune up and some love. If you are ever in need of a trusted repairman in the lower mainland, give us a call and we will put you in touch. A true expert is still around, and for this we are thankful.
9. We currently have 42 typewriters in our collection.
10. 18 emerge for our Letter Writing Club, and one is always out for use during store hours, the rest adorn the shop & are featured in our window displays. Some have names, all have personalities.
11. “It is possible to collect collections if one so desires.” Quote from a book titled 5 Helpful Notes which you can find on our website under Little Books.
12. We have many a collection, typewriters for one, and therefore, we get to count an extra collection of collections. One day we will tell you about them.
13. Currently up in our ‘lowercase reading room’ (located under the stairs in our Vancouver shop) is a book show titled “Summer In the City”. Stop by for a look-see if you are in the neighbourhood and take in our extensive collection of self published books & artist zines.
14. By the time you get here, a new show might be up.
15. And be sure to also have a peek in our drawer galleries located along our front counter.
16. Thanks for reading to the bottom of our 12th Assembly Times Newsletter.
17. Wishing this was our 19th Newsletter as that would make for a better note.
